Every Breath is a good breath

Wind quintet (7 minutes)

What do you know, who knew?

Soprano & piano (5 minutes); Soprano & string quartet (5 minutes)

This piece is the first in a new series of songs, written for my father’s memory. The song cycle has two versions: soprano & piano and soprano & string quartet.

Moon to Dust

viola (6 minutes)

This piece takes inspiration from two Dvorak melodies: Song to the Moon from his popular opera, Rusalka, and O Grant Me in the Dust to Fall, from the oratorio, St. Ludmila. It quotes both pieces and then develops unique variations of each, at times melding the two together. It also draws upon the use of chromatic mediants, a technique most beloved by Dvorak, to introduce new tonal colors. The title draws inspiration from the aforementioned works, and like the music, is an amalgam of both.

Like echoes long that from afar rebound, Merged till one deep low shadowy note is born, Vast as the night or as the fires of morn, Sound calls to fragrance, color calls to sound.
